Germany: President Wulff steps down

Mixing private interests and job responsibilities is never a good idea. President Wulff had to discover this truth today when he had to resign after a series of smaller and bigger scandals that left him damaged and unfit to carry out his tasks.

The straw that finally broke the camels’ back was his relationship to a film producer, for whom he had arranged a loan when he was still Minister-President of the State of Niedersachsen. Local law enforcement authorities had issued a statement on Thursday, declaring they wanted to request a suspension of Wulffs’ legal immunity and prosecute the case.

After months of evading, haggling and deluding, both Chancelor Merkel and her party are left damaged by the Presidents’ actions. They had defended their candidate Wulff long after it was clear he would have no other option but to make way for a new President. Chancelor Merkel issued a statement saying that she regretted Wulff’s decision and was willing to talk to all parties now, in order to find a consensus candidate accepted by all political fractions.
